Northants 2nd Team topped off the season in style by beating nearest league rivals Kettering Rugby 4 in the Knockout Final.
Tim Arthur was first on at 4, and despite Darren Laughton taking the first two games to the tiebreak, Tim's greater consistency and durability saw him close out the rubber 3-0.
Meanwhile Ian Shirley was making a strong start at 5 against the youthful Ryan Feakin, taking the first two games.
Pete Wheat followed Tim on court at 3 and took no time in dispatching Wayne Kilbourne 3-0. Pete's early shotmaking had him in total control of the 'T' and the Kettering man was left valiantly chasing the ball in vain on many occasions.
Ryan was starting a comeback against Ian - taking the next two games 15/11. Unfortunately he then also took the final game 17/16 - despite Ian bravely coming back from a large deficit in the last game - it went to the final point. Disappointment for Ian, but he does therefore win the final "Earl Harrison Value for Money Award" of the season for his efforts !!
The tie was finely balanced at 2-1 when Martin Thompson took to the court at 2 against Richard Smith. Starting slowly, Martin won the first game 17/16 on the tiebreak and then never looked back - closing out the rubber and the match.
This left Steve Iles to take the court at 1 against George Willis. The straight games defeat doesn't bear credit to Steve's effort - turning out after Charlie pulled a hamstring gardening !! - Steve wheezed his way to the tiebreak in each game, just falling short despite some great shot making and retrieving by both players. Steve however entertained royally, engaging in banter with spectators, the marker and his opponent on several occasions (and I mean banter - not abuse) - we did put a call in to the Wellingborough ambulance station to ensure they were on standby but happily not required.
A great season for the Northants 2nds - it's been a pleasure to Captain.
